Well, you might be surprised to find out that Indianapolis is surrounded by a wonderfully diverse art and antiques scene. ![]() And they are seriously beautiful year-round.ħ. There are amazing state parks all around Indianapolis that you can take a day trip to or plan a weekend camping trip with all your friends. Tired of the hustle and bustle of city life? No problem. It’s really the drinking that makes it (let’s be honest). You know, if you like watching cars go around in circles. Okay, so not EVERY person in Indianapolis really give two hoots about the Indy 500, but it is here and it can be a whole lot of fun. ![]() Tree lined, with skyline views and the calming canal really serve as a reminder of why you live in this lovely city.ĭo we need to say more? No? Didn’t think so. If you’re looking for a scenic area of the city to talk a long leisurely walk in, the canal walk is for you. No need for a guidebook here, ask any native! Indianapolis may not be Chicago, Boston or Philadelphia, but that doesn’t mean that the people that live here aren’t as fiercely proud of their city as the big city folk! One of the great things about being the new kid in town is that everyone is very nice and happy to tell you were the best restaurant is in town. Need to get from the Convention Center to Circle Center Mall? No problem, leave your coat behind – you don’t need it! While Chicagoans are over there complaining about the cold, people in downtown Indy are roaming around nice and toasty in the skywalk. It’s worth dragging yourself out into the snow. Oh, also, there’s Devour Downtown for about two weeks in the winter where everyone comes out of their deep winter hibernation and enjoys all the good fare Indy has to offer for a deep discount. But that doesn’t really matter, because the pork tenderloins make up for any steak you are missing out on. Elmo’s is an institution and if you’re not going here to celebrate your special occasions, they’re definitely not special enough. Every city loves their food scene, but Indianapolis loves to eat. The Famous St. Living in Indianapolis definitely has some awesome perks and it is not only watching the Colts play (although, yea, they do a lot of that). Indianapolis may not have the best rap as a cool place to live, but we are hear to tell you none of that is true. The Canal Tow Path Trail is about 5.5 miles end to end, but with plenty of places to park along the way, you can pick up any section(s) you like for a pleasant mile or two stroll.Okay, sure. The canal and tow path run through the shopping/restaurant village of Broad Ripple, the Holcomb Gardens of Butler University and the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art whose "100 Acres" recreation and modern sculpture area make an interesting side jaunt. It is tree lined and, even, forested-so much so that in the summer you can almost forget you are in a city at all. It is an extremely popular route for the city's runners. It's mostly packed fine gravel with some paved sections. The old tow path is now a running/biking/walking trail. The old northern section (Broad Ripple to about 30th Street) now serves as a reservoir for much of Indy's water system. In the summer, you can cruise up and down it in paddle boats or a gondola. The cobblestone-like paved walk completely around is about 5 km and is a favorite for strollers and runners alike. It runs from about 10th Street through the heart of the city to White River State Park. The downtown section now meanders among fountains, ponds, monuments, condos, shops and restaurants. After almost a century of neglect, it was revitalized. The historic 1830s barge canal ran from Broad Ripple on the north through the center of Indy to the White River. ![]()
